With new and constant revelations surrounding the president’s Russia dealings, failing health care repeal, disastrous Muslim travel ban, GOP infighting and dismal approval ratings, the Donald Trump presidency is on course as one of the most troubled in U.S. history.
According to recent Gallup polls, Trump’s approval ratings are the lowest of any president in modern history at a similar benchmark in their presidency; with the reality star’s approval rating now less than 37% nationwide. It’s gotten so bad that even Fox News is reporting Trump’s downslide momentum.
What’s all the upheaval about? Well let’s see: how about the president’s problematic cabinet picks and various nefarious advisers like Bannon, Miller and Conway? Or the oligarchical rise of his sons and daughter to seats of power within the highest branches of government, and his own outright dismissal of the checks and balances within said government? Or the president’s own numerous walk backs, flip flops and Twitter rants?
If it wasn’t the two-time-failed Muslim ban or the GOP’s laughable attempt to repeal and replace the ACA, then it’s certainly the growing criticism of his Russian ties; as evident in the resignation of Mike Flynn, recusal of Jeff Sessions and recent testimony of FBI Director James Comey. Earlier this week, Comey testified before a congressional panel to the fact that his agency is currently conducting an investigation into the Trump administration’s ties to Russia.
In a Washington Post interview earlier this week, noted presidential historian Douglas Brinkley regarded Trump’s first 100 days as president as “the most failed first 100 days of any president.”
“To be as low as he is in the polls, in the 30s, while the FBI director is on television saying they launched an investigation into your ties with Russia, I don’t know how it can get much worse,” he added.
With many Trump-detractors having predicted an official impeachment within the president’s first year in office, it seems this wish is moving ever-closer to a marginal reality with each and every headline.
