There was a recent time in American history when you might be hard-pressed to find a left-minded voter who considered Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to be an advocate for liberal values. The senator’s 2008 presidential run — as well as distinct contention with the Obama administration ever since — all but abolished his previously moderate views as a candidate only 8 years prior when he went up against George W. Bush in the 2000 primaries.

But now, the self-proclaimed “maverick” seems to be channeling his centrist views; breaking ranks with some fellow Republican leaders and publicly standing against Donald Trump’s national security policy [fiasco] agenda.

Just this weekend, McCain — along with fellow Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) — issued a statement against Mr. Trump’s “Muslim ban” executive order, calling it a “self-inflicted wound in the fight against terrorism.”

“This executive order sends a signal, intended or not, that America does not want Muslims coming into our country,” the statement reads. “That is why we fear this executive order may do more to help terrorist recruitment than improve our security.”

In addition, the 80 year old Arizona Senator has publicly gone against Trump’s freshman agenda with regards to Russia (referring repeatedly to Vladimir Putin as a “murderer” and “thug”), torture and multiple Trump cabinet appointments. Prior to the election, McCain pulled his support for the new president after the now notorious “grab them by the pussy” tape was released, while Trump criticized the Senator’s experience as a former P.O.W. during the Vietnam War.

After the McCain/Graham statement, Trump blasted the duo of senators by accusing them of “looking to start World War III”; obviously and as always, irony escapes this president’s motives.

Currently, McCain remains Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He was recently re-elected for a 6 year term as Senator, making him one of the longest-serving members in the Senate.
